I had, inadvertently, configured both the SSH daemon (intentional) as well as the SSH client config (unintentional) on my Ubuntu machine with “PasswordAuthentication no”. Turns out, as obvious as it would be to some, these two are different: /etc/ssh/ ssh_config (client) /etc/ssh/ sshd_config (service daemon) And when you set “PasswordAuthentication no” on the client, it does exactly what you told it too and doesn’t allow you to ssh out with a password (only with keys).
